Hillclimb2002
Subject: Mat O'Mahoney-the fellow that collapsed

A large number of cyclists and spectators have been asking(in person, via telephone, e-mail and the forum) about the man who collapsed at the finish on Saturday. I am happy to tell you that Mat is doing well. Yesterday I had a chance to visit with him and his parents who drove up from Peabody MA to take him home. Mat and his parents asked me to thank everyone for the their support and concern. Mr & Mrs O'Mahoney were particularly impressed with something we all take a bit for granted, how tightly knit the cycling community is, and the concern it has for its members.
Mat was following Tom Danielson at the 1 mile mark when his front wheel hit one of the small rocks forced up through the road by the frost. This quickly sent him to the ground with his rib cage landing firmly on his handle bars-ouch! Mat got up and finished the race, not fully appreciating the extent of his injuries which include some cracked ribs and bruised innards(sorry I forgot the medical term). Those of us that have broken ribs before can attest to the fact that there are few injuries that are more painful, the fact that Mat finished the climb is impressive indeed. Aside from pain the biggest issue for Mat at the summit was severe dehydration. There weren't any issues of collapsed lungs etc. The EMTs followed protocol and were assisted by a physician on the scene.
The main thing is Mat is home now, after a somewhat uncomfortable drive from Gorham to Peadbody and will be fine. He told he's already looking forward to being back next year!

Thank again to everyone for their calls, e-mails etc and concern.
