Hillclimb

Whiteface Mountain, with an 8.2% average grade over 8 miles is probably the best place to train for Mt. Washington. For next year, the organizers of the Whiteface Mountain foot race are planning on adding a bicycle race, mostly likely to occur in late June.

In the mean time, the mountain is now open to cyclists, with several caveats:

First, you cannot be on the road while it is open to traffic. This means that if the road is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, you must leave ample time for the road to clear. This means you must leave before about 6:30 AM in the morning, or after 6 PM in the evening. Leaving the gate at 6:30 AM leaves a cyclist ample time to summit and return before cars are on the road, and leaving the gate after 6 PM allows ample time for cars on the summit to descend.

Second, access to the road is at the discretion of the operators! Let me repeat that -- access to the road is at the discretion of the operators. If they do not allow you access, do not give them a hard time. My experience is that evenings are better than mornings. I have never been turned away after 6:00 PM, but sometimes in the morning there is maintenance on the road and I have been turned away.

Third, do not use the mountain to try to set your personal record downhill speed. The road has many, many frost heaves that are hard to spot, making the descent dangerous. TAKE YOUR TIME GOING DOWN. If you want to go fast, go someplace else.

Again, given the above warnings, Whiteface Mountain is a great place to train and cyclist are welcome. Look for a bike race next year -- when decided, the date will be posted here and on other cycling sites.
