Hillclimb2005

I had an awesome day on Mt Washington yesterday. Drove 5 hours on Sunday night and slept in my car at Pinkham Notch. Monday morning I headed up Tuckerman Ravine, and climbed the headwall essentially on the summer route. Lot's of snow, but no real avalanche danger. The problem was ice fall since the temps had warmed up a bit. Climbing onto the summit cone, the winds were what we've all come to know and love (Ranger station had them at 75mph sustained, with stronger gusts). I put the crampons on and kicked steps straight up. As I climbed over the final pile of rocks onto the upper parking lot, I was blown off my feet a couple of times. But besides some moving clouds, the summit was clear and the view was incredible. I then climbed over Boot Spur and took that trail all the way back to Pinkham. Philly, you'll be glad to know one guy was actually skiing some of the shutes in Tuck's! Even though Oct. got 70+ inches, there is lot's of exposed rock, so I don't know how he did it. I climbed up the finishing climb of the bike race on ice in crampons just for all of you!!
