Hillclimb2004
Subject: What would you do differently?
Author: David ()

This was my first year climbing. As soon as I finished, I immediately thought, wow next year I'm training for this! I completely underestimated the intensity required to climb Washington. Next year I'll ride more long hill repeats and intervals.

Despite the advice of the folks on this forum, I made the mods to my bike at the last minute and didn't ride it under hard conditions. My durailleur wouldn't shift the chain off the middle ring and when it did, the chain dropped right off!

I had a hard time with my lower back and will definately start some back strengthening exercises over the winter.

I climbed with a 22/27 set up and could have used a another gear or two as I was grinding away for most of the climb. Maybe the right training would help me turn the 27 a little better.

Next year I'm bringing my trainer, just in case we have another cold rainy day. I huddled under the tent trying to stay dry watching those with trainers warming up. I also saw a lot of cold wet people out on the road trying to warm up.

I thought that having a Gu about halfway up would be a good idea, but it actually made me nauseous. Next year I'll forget about trying to eat and will stick to the watered down gatorade, which I tolerated just fine.
