Hillclimb2003
Subject: When and where will results be available?

First let me qualify this by saying that I have directed numerous races and have run (in the footrace) or hiked up Mt Washington seven times. I realize that organizing an event like this takes a tremendous amount of work that few people are willing to undertake, and it easy to ask for more. Having expressed that, I have been thinking about doing this bike race and have some concerns that other riders and I have brought up in discussion that race management should address.

Timeliness of race results:

Since race morning, I have gone to the Mt Washington Hillclimb home and race results web pages numerous times, thinking "[For a well-funded event such as this] results should be available by now". Each time, I have been surprised and disappointed that they were not.

Dear Race Director, are the race results tabulated manually? I realize that bar code scanners don't work reliably in wet conditions. If manual tabulation is too laborious, what about using the ChampionChip Timing System, or something similar? Are professional timers managing the finish line and timing? If there were recognized limitations this year, what actions will be taken to overcome those challenges for next year's race?

When and where will 2003 race results become available? Why is is taking this long? (posted 8-17-03, 10pm EST) I am concerned that this event will eventually diminish itself and tarnish Tin Mountain's public image if these types of organizational problems are not addressed appropriately.

Additionally, when a request was posted to see the financials, financial data for Tin Mtn Conservation Ctr was made available, but the financials for this race were not. I think athletes want to know specifically what in this race their entry fees are funding. As one person mentioned in a recent post, you'd think for $300, they'd have vans to bring you down the mtn - and I don't want to hear excuses about liability being the reason why a $300 entry fee can't cover this cost. Inviting you to bike UP this mtn is a far greater risk than driving down the mtn. The sooner one gets off this mtn, the less risk one is exposed to.

I noticed that for 2001, the most recent year for which financial data is available, programs represented only 49 percent of expenditures by Tin Mtn, whereas 51 percent of the organization's expenditures were for "administration" and "fundraising". Those are relatively high levels of administration and fundraising expenses. In 2001, $107,027 was spent on administration out of Tin Mtn's Total Expenses of $381,108. Of this $107,027 figure, $73,737 was listed as being for "Personnel". Is that one person's or more than one person's salary? 33,290 was listed as being for "other" under "administration" expenses. Nine percent of $381,108 is a pretty big percentage to list as "other".

According to www.give.org, a charitable organization should "spend at least 65% of its total expenses on program activities."

Only 49 percent of Tin Mtn's were spent on program activities.

Well, what's going on? People want to know how their money is being spent on this $300 per person "fundraiser". I am sure the Attorney General for the State of NH (http://www.state.nh.us/nhdoj/CHARITABLE/char.html) can always look into it, as this is a [federally tax exempt] IRS 501(c)(3) organization that is registered with the state of NH as well, but others and I would like to hear from the event organizers first, starting with the financial information from the 2002 event, which should be available by now.
